The Lake Oconee area has become
a golfer’s paradise. In the mid-1980’s
Port Armor opened the first golf course for play. This challenging layout along the lakefront
was recognized by golfers as being special and was the impetus for the
development of other outstanding golf communities on the lake.
Reynolds Plantation then built the
Plantation Course, followed by the
spectacular Great Waters course, a Jack Nicklaus design, with many holes along
the lake. Subsequently, Tom Fazio
designed the 27 hole National Course on the Plantation Grounds. Reynolds opened the Ritz Carlton Lodge on the
lake, a few years later, supported by the Oconee Course, designed by Rees
Jones. The most recent course to open is
the Creek Club.
In 1989, Harbor Club began
developing a 1000 acre lakefront golf community featuring a Jay Morrish/Tom
Weiskopf traditional design course,
through beautiful rolling terrain, lined with pine and hardwoods accented with
dogwoods in the spring. This course has also been recognized by leading golf
magazines, as well as golfers, for its quality and character and gorgeous lake
views.
The Cuscowilla golf community,
named for a Cherokee Indian chief,
opened 18 holes, designed by Crenshaw/Coore. This course
winds through meadows and valleys, accented by huge pine trees. There are spectacular lake views of the lake
and plays like a true links course.
Many quality tournaments have
been played here, including the Georgia Open, PGA Tour qualifiers, two world
match play championships which were held at Great Waters, as well as collegiate
matches and tournaments.
Every Spring, golfers from all over gather and stay here during Master’s Week to
play our courses and attend the Masters Tournament in Augusta!
